Behaviour in vulcanization

NAFTONOX BHT is a high-grade, non-staining and non-spotting antioxidant with a wide range of application in natural and synthetic rubbers and their latices, in numerous thermoplastics, mineral and synthetic industrial lubricants and fats, motor fuels and petrol fractions, as well as in animal and vegetable oils.

Typical fields of application

Natural and synthetic rubbers and latices

NAFTONOX BHT is a multi-purpose antioxidant for natural rubber and all synthetic rubbers and their latices. It does not discolour non cause spots or flecks on the protected products even after prolonged exposure to light. Neither contact staining non corona effects were to be observed in materials containing NAFTONOX BHT in contact with other materials. Due to a certain volatility it is not recommended for heat strained articles. NAFTONOX BHT offers excellent protection against the crazing effect in light coloured vulcanizates and against the harmful effects of overvulcanization. The product is equally energetic against the harmful effect of rubber poisons like Cu and Mn. In combination with e.g. mercaptobenzimidazole a synergistically increased protection is achieved. At heat-compounding in the internal mixer, NAFTONOX BHT prevents the cyclization of synthetic rubbers. When used in latex compounds, NAFTONOX BHT has to be added in a dispersed form which we supply under the name NAFTONOX BHT-E 50 %.
For solid rubber compounds and latices we recommend a concentration between 0.5 - 2.0 phr NAFTONOX BHT on 100 phr rubber or rubber dry substance.

Plastics

For the use in plastics like polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene a.o., NAFTONOX BHT is an important processing stabilizer against degradation due to heat or oxygen influenze. It will be advantageous to use still another synergist like e.g. thioalkyl acid esters to increase the protective effect. For stabilizíng plastics we recommend a concentration of 0. 1 - 0.5 parts by weight NAFTONOX BHT on 100 parts plastic.

Motor fuels, lubricating oils and fats

NAFTONOX BHT prevents in certain petrol fractions like crack and pyrolysis petrols, aircraft motor oils a.o. the resin-like separations (gum formation). The input of NAFTONOX BHT to lubricating oils like motor oils, hydraulic oils as well as to lubricating fats is equally very important to prevent autoxidative reactions. We recommend a concentration of 0.1 - 0.5 % NAFTONOX BHT.
